A Busy Month
I do apologize for my lack of entries. The past two weeks have been very busy for our family. We had to fly out to Goodland, Kansas on March 11th for the funeral of my wife's grandmother. We had were expecting her to pass away this year after she was diagnosed with a non-operable lymphoma. She died two days after her birthday. One bright spot from this was that we had sent her a birthday card which she had received prior to passing away. From what we were told by the other residents was that she went and visited everyone to show them that her youngest grandson had printed his name. The day before the funeral we decided to do some sight seeing around Goodland, Kansas and came across these two points of interest.
This is a replica of a Van Gogh painting. He made seven paintings of sunflowers. The artist is on a mission to get all seven paintings placed where sunflowers are part of the local agriculture.
The Kidder Massacre site is located 18 miles North of Goodland on a dirt road. Lt. Kidder and 10 men were attacked by a group of Indians. The scout was the only individual that wasn't scalped.
After the funeral we decided to go back to Colorado Friday evening and surprise the kids with something special on Saturday before our flight back to Corpus Christi on Sunday morning. The 14th was a very beautiful day so we decided to go down to Colorado Springs and go to Pikes Peak. The drive up to the top was truly amazing. The beauty of God's work left me in awe.
This shot of Pikes Peak is from the North around the area where the Air Force Academy is located.
In the background is Ute Pass. This was one of our first stops going up the mountain. You can only guess which person in this photo has a fear of heights.
Our next stop was at Crystal Lake Reservoir with Pikes Peak in the background. Of course we had to take a couple of family photos while we were here.

We reached the top of Pikes Peak around 1:45 p.m. The view from the top was truly beautiful. It had been my intention to get my picture taken with the Corpus Christi Hooks flag that I had brought along but the altitude sickness affected both of the boys. Our youngest one was able to hang on for one shot.
Before we left the summit we made sure to have some of their world famous donuts. The recipe which they use only works at that altitude. I had also intended to visit the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Stadium which is also located in Colorado Springs but we ran out of time. We had spent nearly 6 hours on Pikes Peak.
We were only home for two days when we went away for an extended weekend in the Waller/Brenham, Texas area to get away from the Spring Breakers down here. Brenham is famous for the Blue Bell Creamery. We took a tour of the facility on Thursday and later on that night we went to the Showboat Drive-In in Hockley, Texas to watch Race to Witch Mountain and Confessions of a Shopaholic.
On Friday we decided to do some sightseeing around the Chappell Hill area and came across some truly amazing Bluebonnet fields.

Earlier this month I picked up our family's Season Pass along with our two tickets for the Corpus Christi Hooks and Houston Astros Exhibition game on April 2nd. The tickets for this event sold out fairly quick. Time will tell if the attendence will break the record set when Roger Clemens pitched a game for the Hooks.
A couple of the 2008 Hooks have played in some of the Astros spring training games so we will wait and see where some of these players fall within the system. Outfield Josh Flores should return to the Hooks this year. He sat out the 2008 season due to an injury. He had went to a restaurant earlier on in 2008 and slipped coming off a curb. He had surgery to repair his ACL.
Our family is anxious for the 2009 regular season to start which also happens to be my wife's birthday. It hasn't been the same without our Hooks fix.

I'm so sorry about your wife's grandmother. That's great that she was able to read the card before she passed away. Those are some incredible pictures! God is so amazing. Wow.
